Specialized Chisel Full Solstice bike check
You'll probably realise straight away that this is a particularly rambling 'so tired I might as well be drunk' tech check presentation of the Chisel I rode for the 110km of our Solstice overnighter. However, if you can look beyond the bloodshot eyes, slurring and buffering of an old idiot who had been up 42 hours at this point then there's actually some useful info in here. Mostly about how the bike performed way better than I expected considering there's some budget parts on here.

The bar kills my hands, braking fingers go numb I end up just resting my hands on the grips. Really need new bars, I think its the backsweep and the negative drop.
Hello Guy, Great to see a lot of quality content about the new Chisel from you. Would you mind me asking if the frame has holes for cable routing for a rear shock remote lockout? If not, could it be possible to run the cable externally with some zip ties? Also, I was wondering how the tire clearance was like on the rear with that 2.4" Peyote, and what the measured width of that tire might be? Do you happen to know the maximum tire width recommended by Specialized? Cheers for the brilliant coverage overall, much appreciated 😊✌🏼
Brilliant video, just got the silex 200, after watching your video
S works Regression - Back to 90’s MTB
Wish the Shimano version came in the Gloss Dove Grey / Ashen Grey colors!
Hi Guy, really appreciate your reviews of the different Sparks. I'm coming from the previous generation (2018), can you say anything about how the new ones compares, mostly focused on the descending part? And perhaps the Transition Spur? I haven't seen you reviewing that one yet? Please continue your excellent in-depth reviews of the equipment!
I loved that night day ride you did on the Chisel. I am debating whether to get this or the Spark. That super thin seat stay makes me nervous 😬
epic 8 s works to top line Scott Spark, for overall bike feel and occasional race, which would you choose?
Just got a trek top fuel 6 xt found your review very helpfull the medium frame is a perfect fit for me tyers seem a bit sluggish on tarmac getting to the trail but are great when you get there i did try the shimano wheels and schwalbe tyres from my cube stereo 120r and the bike felt perfect in a class of its own
Boy, my crew and I would be walking around a lot of that muddy mess, but you guys are charging right through it! Great review as well - thanks!
Do you think it would work as a down country type bike. Or is it too light & better suited for XC fire trails?
What was average Cadence.in eco.
The orbea rise 140 might just match it . ?
Around 90 as it runs better with a faster spin
I can’t find the Race T in an enduro casing, only the DH which is 1400+ grams. Do you think the Enduro M on rear would be better from a weight and rolling speed standpoint than the DH casing T?
For looks that's about it ! Gold plated or not !
My first Yeti cost me more than the Westfallia I went off to school with.
Thank you very much, could you tell me a list of components I could improve the Chisel bicycle,
I got the oil slick regret it now ! 1 hour and every couple days recharge ! Heavy ! Way over priced ! Sorry ! Not reliable ! their are light that are much better ! Thank you !
Where did you get your name decal from?
They had some spare from marking bikes up at a press launch you’ll be hearing all about next week so I stuck one on the Chisel too
Take a breather and then talk so we can understand you
You sound like my wife 🤣
Multi day bikepacking would you choose this or Boardman MHT 8.9? Is double the price and rear shock worth the money?
It depends entirely whether you feel you need full suspension. MHT is a great bike for the money and a hardtail leaves space for a frame bag. If you can afford the Chisel FS though it’ll be a smoother ride for sure
Ey up guy, brilliant video that pal really enjoyed it, Was that little viewing castle thing on the small lake in between thruscross and fewston res?
Yes it was mate, good spot. The one with the little porthole and the ‘drawbridge’ up to it 👍🏻
@@GuyKesTV thanks mate 👍
Thx,that's a proper test! Is that crew the plastic under the motor? Cheer's from Italy....
I've already ordered my lovely seafoam Chisel FS Deore. It will arrive on Wednesday. Can't wait 😬
Great video, recognised most of that route, but couldn't work out the bit after Thrusscross dam wall in the background, sent a Strava request 🙂
Righto boss, I’ll check Strava now
Where is this place? is it normal it has no trees?
Can alloy get fisures when bended? since I see there is no bearings in the rear triangle like other bikes have, I'm speaking from ignorance.
These videos have got me thinking... I have not had a MTB before but am fed up with "gravel" in the UK not really being gravel. Would the comp version of this be a good first MTB or should I grab a 2023 Epic Evo whilst they are a similar price?
TBH if you can find one in your size then grab a 23 Epic Evo or even an Epic as they’re a lot lighter and if you’re just wanting to ride rough ‘gravel’ then Epic would be fine
@@GuyKesTVthanks! I am not going to be chucking myself down anything excessive anytime soon. Plenty of medium epics and evos on sale too! 🎉
@@menthel77 perfect, still an absolutely class bike and the lightest full suspension frame you can get with a decent warranty too
Looks nice! I wish Specialized will offer a dropper handle on Chisel.
Specialized website says "High" position puts the head angle at 70° from 66.5° in "Low" position. That must be a mistake. All other geo changes are much more subtle between flip chip positions.
Haha yeah they definitely got that wrong. It’s 67 in the high position. Actually it’s a little bit less when I measured but close enough
@GuyKesTV That's what I figured thanks for confirming.
Recently picked up an epic pro LTD at 50% discount, swapped the brain shock for a Bike Yoke + RS SID Ultimate 3P, and swapped the brain fork damper for a RS Raceday charger 2 3P... However, if this bike was released I'd have been seriously tempted to go with this instead, this looks like such a good bike for the vast majority of XC riders who aren't interested in going racing.... Epic EVO I hear you say but it was completely sold out and I'm happy with 110mm front and 95mm rear, works perfectly for my local XC trails.... Anyway, the Chisel FS will be popular, it hits the right price point and the spec looks to be good quality, a perfect base frame from which to upgrade.
That sounds like you’ve got a sick bike at a great price anyway
@@GuyKesTV Yeah, it's such a good XC bike - a huge improvement from my 2012 Kinesis FF29 which was getting a little old and tired!
What a great review. You REALLY rode that bike!
Thanks 👍🏻
I must have got a good one and within the working range for how i ride it because the Charger 3 Pike I have is great!
Thank you very much for doing this and spending the time making these videos. Is the lockout on the XFusion firm or soft? It seems like there is a large variability in shock lockouts nowadays. Also, do you think its lockout strength would wear out quickly?
It’s firm for pedalling but the blow off valve is light so it’s not a disaster if you forget to switch it off before a descent. The lockout is hydraulic not friction so it won’t wear out
@@GuyKesTVthank you very much!
Cool ride review!! Spotted the Q2 Mini on your table, care to comment on it? Thanks
Just got that in for review so ill have the video up soon
Everybody who watches you knows “you’ve been a professional bike tester for 25+ years”. Please stop saying it.
How much weight can you lose by making all the changes?
I had a chisel HT which is 1 kilo lighter frame. I got that down to 9.3kilo without going too crazy to 10.5 with this bike should be easy
Which shock absorber would I change the xfusion for?
I’d go for SIDLuxe
and how does it compare to Cervelo ZFS-5? Cervelo can be lighter (and cheaper). but which is more "fun"
Cervelo is much like the Epic 8. I’d say it’s more lively and agile than the Spesh as the frame is more flexible and the angles aren’t as slack. For flat out charging though stuff and fast technical descents the Epic probably has the edge. I’ve got a ZFS and I love it which is why I went for the Evo as a long term choice as that’s more of a fast trail bike
@@GuyKesTV thanks! yest I have been watching youtobe all last night and see that evo is a different beast now and standard 8 is the old evo. So ZFS it will probably be :). However would you consider flight attendant on the ZFS on the 120mm or rather remain with standard grip shift?
@@MarcinLipowskiFlight Attendant is really good for racing but for fun riding normal shock set up is fine. ZFS pedals great in open mode anyway 👍🏻
Great vid Guy and great ride! Really enjoyed watching it! Need to do something like this myself!
Cheers Max, we love this sort of ride. And if all night seems a bit much just pick a warm night and take a sleeping bag for a few hours kip
Great review Guy and great work. I’ve been watching both your reviews on the Bokeh and Exposure as I am flipflopping between the 2…Obviously it ultimately comes down to personal pref and what the bike will be used for, but would love to get your take on a direct side by side comp as I am headed to Sussex for a demo….Would you say the Bokeh is as versatile as the Exposure, in terms of the terrain it can (comfortably?) tackle or is the Bokeh’s main advantage it’s speed? Would you ride the Bokeh on the more rugged patches seen on the route you tested the Exposure on? Thanks for your help and the great vids!
You’ll definitely be more aware of the rough bits on Bokeh but the acceleration is better. I’d be really interested in your feedback after you’ve tried them yourself though
seus vídeos são muito bons meu irmão, parabéns 👏👏👏👏
Great bike and a great review. We need more quality bikes in this price class, especially since money is tight for most.
No water refill on a 100k offroader? That's way less than 500 mil an hour, if true. The dew kept ya going? Are you guys part plant?😅
Its Yorkshire not Death Valley 😆

@@marktownend3782 there’s a cheeky shortcut across to the top of Guisecliffe just before the steep descent of Peat Lane, starts as bridleway then footpath after. That’s the grassy bit and then the moorland singletrack bit at dawn in the video. Theres a pretty high dry stone wall you’d need to get your eeb over though
